A Day in the Life of a Dog at Posh Pooch Day Camp

dogs on the playground Ever wonder what your dog actually does all day at day camp?

At Posh Pooch in Beaufort SC, no two days—and no two dogs—are exactly alike. From indoor and outdoor play to enrichment, one-on-one attention, and intentional rest, each day is shaped around the dogs in our care.

Campers spend their day in thoughtfully selected groups based on size, safety, temperament, and overall comfort. A dog’s needs can change throughout the day, so their group, activity, or pace should reflect that. We pay attention to the little cues and adjust accordingly.

Our standard Day Camp day runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with drop-off available as early as 7 a.m. and pickup as late as 5:45 p.m.

So, what happens between drop-off and that happily tired ride home? Come spend a day at Posh Pooch with us.

Morning Arrival and Settling Into the Right Group

Some dogs arrive eager to get through the doors. Others prefer a slower start. Our team pays attention to that difference when deciding how each dog settles in.

Depending on familiarity and temperament, a camper may begin with time to acclimate in a private yard or move directly into group play. Early arrivals start in a private play yard before transitioning into a group. Dogs having breakfast eat in private play yards while our team prepares for the day.

Size and safety come first when we form groups, with temperament helping us determine where each dog will feel comfortable. That initial placement can change as we observe how the dog responds throughout the day.

Scheduled day camp activities begin at 9 a.m. We may have four or five groups in a day, with dogs of similar temperaments rotating together through our indoor day camp areas and outdoor spaces.

Each group has access to the playground, fetch yard, its corresponding day camp yards, indoor spaces, and the seasonal water park. Outdoor access is available throughout the day, so bathroom opportunities extend beyond “potty breaks”.

Activities vary throughout the year. Along with fetch and water play, campers may take part in interactive games, pet crafts for their parents, photo opportunities, contests, and holiday activities. There’s also much time for affection and snuggles.

The group rotations provide structure, while each dog chooses how much to participate. A camper who wants more activity may need a different group from one whose interest is more isolated. Our team watches those changes and adjusts placement accordingly.

Midday Rest With Room for Individual Preferences

Dogs can rest whenever they need to, and we also set aside a midday rest period. We put out extra mats and beds, dim the lights, and play soothing music to encourage campers to settle.

For dogs who attend three to five days a week, this is a familiar part of their routine. Less frequent visitors often settle with the group, too. Some dogs prefer to walk around quietly or receive a little affection instead of sleeping.

After the break, enrichment resumes before pickup. The pace continues to depend on the dogs in our care that day, including whether they need more rest, a smaller group, or space to decompress.

Getting to know a dog means learning more than a name. We learn routines, preferences, boundaries, and the small cues that help us understand when a camper is comfortable or needs something different.

Sometimes that means bringing out a favorite toy, offering affection, or doing tricks for treats. Sometimes it means giving a dog space to enjoy a quieter moment.

Throughout the day, our team watches for changes in energy, body language, social interactions, appetite, bathroom habits, rest patterns, and overall demeanor. When something is outside a pet’s usual pattern, we discuss it as a team, respond proactively, and communicate with the pet’s parents when appropriate.

This is what our whole-health approach looks like in practice: considering physical comfort, emotional well-being, rest, and social experiences as we make daily care decisions.

The Camper Personalities We Get to Know

Some of the most memorable moments are found in the little routines and personalities our guests make uniquely their own. One Labrador Retriever never misses an opportunity to sneak in a kiss on the cheek at check-in, while a deeply loved three-legged Border Collie–Terrier mix impresses us with agility that rivals many of our four-legged guests. A close-knit group of our Tiny Camp regulars has affectionately earned the nickname “the Cool Girl Club” and we’ve got the sweetest group of “Southern Gents” in Bigs.

These individual quirks, friendships, and familiar routines are part of what makes getting to know each pet so special—and what allows our team to care for them as individuals rather than simply as guests.

Is Group Day Camp the Right Fit for Your Dog

Our day camp depends on dogs being comfortable in a social environment. From the first conversation with a family, we work to understand whether that environment is a good fit for their pet.

Our evaluation considers temperament, comfort level, social behavior, and behaviors that may be incompatible with the program. To participate, dogs must be able to socialize respectfully with other dogs, transition willingly and safely between yards while off-leash, and remain free of aggressive or destructive behaviors.

Within those requirements, we adapt care to individual dogs. Being clear about the group setting helps families understand what the experience involves before deciding whether to pursue day camp.

Alongside a thoughtful balance of play, enrichment, and restorative rest, our team manages each pet’s day with their overall comfort and well-being at the forefront. From feeding and transitions to individualized attention, every part of our routine is approached with intention.

That same philosophy extends to the environment around them. Our team continuously maintains clean, comfortable, well-ventilated spaces, promptly tending to areas as needed with pet-friendly cleaning solutions. We are mindful not only of cleanliness, but of the products and practices used in the spaces where pets eat, rest, play, and spend their day.

Our 24/7 camera access brings an added level of transparency to that care, giving parents the comfort of checking in throughout the day and seeing firsthand the environment, routines, and attentive care their pet experiences while with us
